Tell Tweini or ancient Gibala is located in the Syrian coastal plain and represents the southernmost harbour of the Ugaritic Kingdom in the Late Bronze Age. As one of the few sites under excavation in the Northern Levant with a full archaeological sequence spanning the Early Bronze Age IV (ca. 2400 BCE) up to the Iron Age III period (ca. 500 BCE), Tell Tweini (Field A) is a key site for the study of the developments in the Northern Levant especially where the Bronze to Iron Age transition is concerned. The yearly missions at Tell Tweini conducted by a Belgian-Syrian team have halted since 2011; however, the continuous research of the prodigious amount of data available has not. Over the past years the research team headed by Joachim Bretschneider (University Ghent) has focused on the study of particular groups of artefacts, ecofacts and landscape, resulting in new and exciting insights on various aspects of the settlement of Tell Tweini presented in this book.

This volume presents the results of the excavations conducted by the University of Copenhagen at Pontecagnano (Prop. Avallone), located some 8 km southeast of Salerno in the northern part (the Ager Picentinus) of the Sele Plain in Campania. The excavations revealed a part of the residential zone of the ancient town with two main phases of occupation, the first belonging to the late Classical/early Hellenistic period (second half of 4th to early 3rd century BC) and the second to the late Republican period (2nd to first half of 1st century BC). Both phases represent crucial periods in the history of Southern Italy. The first is a period of turmoil due to the Roman penetration southwards, while the second period falls after a period of crisis after the Second Punic War. The structures of the first phase form part of a general reorganization of the Etruscan-Campanian settlement and testify to a community of some wealth. A habitation unit provided with a stone-paved courtyard and polychrome stucco illustrates this. In the second phase the zone was only partly reoccupied. During Imperial times the area was frequented in a sporadic manner. The book adds considerably to our knowledge of the settlement of ancient Pontecagnano. It is the most complete work on a habitation context published so far, and it offers a fine selection of all groups of archaeological material from this important site.

La ville antique de Saepinum est un lieu où le charme des ruines se combine avec celui de la nature en un tableau qui nous renvoie aux paysages du Grand Tour : sur l'arrière-plan des montagnes du Matese se détachent les colonnes de la basilique romaine et les fermes paysannes nichées dans les gradins du théâtre. Mais cette cité romaine n'est pas seulement une incitation au rêve. De par l’état de conservation de ses constructions, de par l'abondance de ses inscriptions. Saepinum offre un reflet de la vie antique qu'il convient de capter. L’agglomération, née au IIIe siècle avant J.-C., se développa lentement, à l’interface de l’économie montagnarde et de l’élevage transhumant. Elle connut une mutation radicale lorsque Drusus et Tibère lui offrirent, entre 2 avant J.-C. et 4 après J.-C., une enceinte dotée de tours et de portes. C’est à cette époque que furent mis en place les bâtiments publics autour du forum et que furent édifiées des demeures à atrium ouvrant sur le decumanus maximus. Dans l’une d’elles, les dégagements des années 1950 mirent au jour un moulin à eau et un ensemble de cuves tronconiques. Les fouilles effectuées par le Centre Jean Bérard entre 2005 et 2009 ont permis d’interpréter ces vestiges comme ceux d’une tannerie édifiée à la fin du Ier ou au début du IIe siècle et d’un moulin à écraser le tan, adjoint dans la seconde moitié du IIIe ou au début du IVe siècle. La tannerie trouve des correspondances dans la grande installation de traitement des cuirs de Pompéi (I 5, 2). Le moulin équipé d’une roue à augets actionnait un arbre à cames soulevant des pilons qui écrasaient les écorces. Une telle machinerie reporte de près de dix siècles l'invention du moulin à tan dont les premières attestations dans les archive datent du XIIe siècle. L’installation artisanale fonctionna jusqu’au début du Ve siècle, puis la maison fut abandonnée. L’étude présente les structures bâties, les stratigraphies et l’ensemble des mobiliers archéologiques. "The symposium held in Athens on 'Early Cycladic Sculpture in Context' in May 2014 (now published: Marthari et al. 2017) prompted the organisation of a second symposium, on 25th and 26th May 2015, on the theme 'Early Cycladic Sculpture in Context from beyond the Cyclades: mainland Greece, the north and east Aegean'. In parallel, a separate symposium on 'Cycladica in Crete' was held in Athens in October 2015 (also now published: Stampolidis & Sotirakopoulou 2017). These two symposia aimed systemically to survey the evidence for Cycladic sculpture in arcaheological contexts from beyond the Cyclades. The publication of the present volume, in combination with the two volumes that have preceded it, brings to completion the work of publishing all the contextualised Cycladic material from the Aegean.".
